I will add something else, though I admit this was almost certainly not on the filmmakers’ minds: It is not widely admitted in popular writings on the subject, but Krampus is a Christian character. Clues were also given during the movie commentary by Michael Dougherty, Todd Casey (co-writers) and Zach Shields (co-writers). But won't confirm to which is the real ending. Since Max learned the lesson Krampus wanted him to learn, offering himself up to the Christmas demon in the end, that vision, in so many words, did not end up coming true. It’s certainly a valid interpretation of the film, though my personal take-away from the ending, as I originally relayed on Halloween Love back in 2015, was that Dougherty was imparting genuine holiday cheer – and a message we could all stand to learn. This is not unlike various other horror films, which often follow normal story conventions and then reverse them in a final scene. why did Max Grandmother Omi lose her parents and the whole town villagers who were all dragged into hell. As for the bell that Max opens up on that happy Christmas morning, I viewed that as Krampus reminding Max that he’s watching, and letting him know that though none of those awful things actually happened to his family, it was all something more than a mere nightmare – even his family members seem to recognize the bell in some way, suggesting that they too experienced the same nightmare. Krampus is first and foremost a bogeyman, and bogeyman always threaten punishment more than they actually deliver it. The way I saw it, that was just Dougherty’s way of showing that those snow globes are Krampus’ portals to the real world. Max wished that his family would go away, and by taking him on a nightmarish journey, Krampus showed Max that what he thought he wanted wasn’t what he wanted at all. which we all have to assume is of different people. My argument is based on the very nature of Krampus and of characters like him. The only other film I can think of that triangulates between horror, the holidays, and dark comedy this well is the '80s classic Gremlins, and I might even go so far into apostasy as to call Krampus the better movie; at any rate, it has more convincing characters and more insightful family drama. Since Krampus follows so many other stock conventions, it is reasonable to suppose that its ending is meant to depict the family as defeated and damned in spite of Max’s final act. Though he may not be as cute or cuddly, it seems clear to me that Michael Dougherty views Krampus in much the same way he does Trick ‘r Treat‘s Sam; they’re both living, breathing cautionary tales for their respective holidays, existing for the primary purpose of teaching people to respect, appreciate, and uphold holiday traditions and values. So which ending is real?. Krampus’s minions leap at the camera for a final, mild jump scare.
