This translational debris slide occurred when saturated land slid on a layer of glacial clay.

The steepest angle that a cohesionless slope can maintain without losing its stability is known as its angle of repose. This small rockfall displays the piecemeal nature and relative cleanliness of this type of landslide. Susceptible marine clay (quick clay) when disturbed is very vulnerable and may lose all shear strength with a change in its natural moisture content and suddenly liquefy, potentially destroying large areas and flowing for several kilometres. Active layer detachments, also known as skinflows, involve a rapid flow of a shallow layer of saturated soil and vegetation, forming long, narrow flows moving on the surface but over the underlying permanently frozen soil.

When a slope made of loose material possesses this angle, its shear strength counterbalances the force of gravity acting upon it. Solifluction, a form of cold environment creep, involves very slow deformation of the surface and forms shallow lobes elongated downslope.

Flows are common in ice-rich permafrost soils in northern latitudes and high altitudes (cold environments). Steel rails and stout timbers hold up the roadbed at left--for now. Mass wasting occurs on both terrestrial and submarine slopes, and has been observed on Earth, Mars, Venus, and Jupiter's moon Io. Movement is caused by internal shear stress sufficient to cause deformation but insufficient to cause failure.
The hourglass shape is typical.

Earthflows involve fine-grained material that forms a thick slurry and has a fluid motion.

They may evolve into a larger debris flow.

The simplest slide involves large blocks of rock that do little more than move downhill, leaving a slide surface behind them. Soil creep is a slow process based on wetting and drying (or freezing and thawing) cycles.

Mass wasting, also known as slope movement or mass movement, is the geomorphic process by which soil, sand, regolith, and rock move downslope typically as a solid, continuous or discontinuous mass, largely under the force of gravity, frequently with characteristics of a flow as in debris flows and mudflows. Slope movements, including types of landslides and extremely slow soil creep (Varnes, 1978), occur throughout the United States and within many national parks.

Unlike concrete walls, gabions allow free drainage through themselves, benefiting the slope from both sides. Factors that change the potential of mass wasting include: change in slope angle, weakening of material by weathering, increased water content; changes in vegetation cover, and overloading. Early detection can lead to timely mitigation.

Creep is widespread around the world and is probably the most common type of landslide, often preceding more rapid and damaging types of landslides. It is difficult to discern the boundaries of creep since the event itself is so slow and surface features representing perceptible deformation may be lacking. Its signs are subtle, but building designs must account for it.
Earthflows in susceptible marine clays may runout for several kilometers. When the gravitational force acting on a slope exceeds its resisting force, slope failure (mass wasting) occurs. This page was last edited on 8 October 2020, at 17:04.

The most common mitigation for creep is to ensure proper drainage of water, especially for the seasonal type of creep. The speed of slope creep is very slow, unlike the speed of a landslide or mudslide; all of which might be considered to be in a category of hillslope mass movements, the same as slope creep.

This type of feature will continue to expand through headscarp retrogression until displaced vegetation buries and insulates the ice-rich scarp. A slide involves slow motion along a surface of weakness above undisturbed material.
